Panthers’ Cam Newton Poised For Regular Season Play

Published

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton had a solid preseason performance during Thursday night’s 24-23 preseason victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars, but wishes he could see some more action.

“I just wish I had played a little longer,” Newton said, (h/t ESPN). “I feel behind in a lot of ways, but the optimism of this game is we did have a great first drive.”

A 10-play 75 yard drive capped off by a 9-yard touchdown pass to Kelvin Benjamin has Newton stoked for what lies ahead in 2017.

As far as the remainder of the preseason goes, Newton would love to play a bit more.

“Absolutely,” Newton said.

“I mean, ain’t got no choice. But when everything gets to going, I’m pretty sure Coach will have everybody ready to go.”

And about his arm?

“It’s not no percentage I can really give you. I feel great right now. I felt great then. I’m ready to go.”

“I was very pleased with what we saw,” Panthers coach Ron Rivera said. “I’m looking forward to getting the chance to look at the tape, and really kind of break it down a little bit more.”

“I’d be lying if I said he wasn’t a little extra excited to be out there tonight,” said Panthers center Ryan Kalil.

“I don’t think anybody’s worried Cam’s not going to perform,” Panthers rookie Christian McCaffrey said. “He’s a helluva player and we’re excited he’s back out there feeling like him.

“We all feed off his energy. When we’re at our best he’s having fun.”

Tre Boston

The Carolina Panthers have signed veteran free safety Tre Boston to a one-year, $3 million deal, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Once again, Boston has had to endure a lengthy stay on the free agent market before landing with a new team, as he had to do last season prior to signing with the Arizona Cardinals.

Boston return to the Panthers, who drafted him in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL draft.

Gerald McCoy

Carolina Panthers new defensive tackle Gerald McCoy has his eyes on doing some big things in his new defense during the upcoming season.

Greatness” McCoy said, during an appearance on WFNZ Radio. “I didn’t come for anything less .This defense, as a whole, can be so incredible. And if you add me, it just puts it over the top with what I’ve been able to do in my career. Little tricks of the trade, and things I have and see that a lot of people don’t see that I can help these guys up front see.”

McCoy is confident that his addition will bring Carolina’s defense to the next level.

“I know what I’m capable of. I know what I still have left in the tank, and I truly believe not only can I that same type of production, but I can go even higher than what people have seen over the past few years.”

Panthers’ Luke Kuechly Not Concerned for Scheme Change

Luke Kuechly

Carolina Panthers veteran linebacker Luke Kuechly isn’t too concerned about a defensive scheme change which will have him taking on a different role on the defense moving forward.

Carolina will employ more 3-4 looks into their defense for the 2019 season which will move Kuechly around from his traditional spots on the defense, but he isn’t too worried about it.

“It’s just football. There’s been certain looks that we’ve run in the past that mimic what we do now. So it’s not completely foreign,” Kuechly said, according to Joseph Person of The Athletic. “There’s just a couple new things here and there that are different, but pretty straightforward.”
