Bears Sign Khalil Mack to Historic Contract Extension

After acquiring him in a trade with the Oakland Raiders on Saturday, the Chicago Bears have agreed to terms on a six-year, $141M contract extension that includes $90M guaranteed and a $60M signing bonus, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Mack’s new deal tops the new deal signed by Aaron Donald with the Los Angeles Rams, as Mack will earn a $22.5 million annual average, slightly more than Donald’s.

Mack, 27, will instantly elevate the Chicago defense and will be the cornerstone of that unit for the next several years.

Three Takeaways from the Detroit Lions loss to the Chicago Bears on Thanksgiving, putting them at 4-7 and just about ending their playoff hopes.

1. Both of Matthew Stafford’s interceptions killed the Lions chances of winning this game

Matthew Stafford had two interceptions against the Bears, and both of them were game sealing interceptions. The 1st one was in mid-way through the 4th quarter when Eddie Jackson read an out route perfectly, picked off Stafford, and returned the interception for a touchdown to take a 23-16 lead. Then, the 2nd interception was late in the 4th when the Lions were driving down the field, only for Stafford to just throw it up to Michael Roberts in the corner of the endzone, only for Roberts to not expect to get the ball. Kyle Fuller ended up getting the interception with ease as it was basically thrown to him. It has been mentioned earlier in this season and it still applies now that when Stafford turns the ball over, it happens at the worst time and the turnovers look so bad.

2. LeGarrette Blount did his best as a fill in for Kerryon Johnson

Blount carried his weight as he rushed for 88 yards on 19 carries along with two touchdowns. With Kerryon Johnson out with a knee injury, the Lions still needed to establish a running game and Blount did a pretty good job of doing that this week. While Blount isn’t having his best year with the Lions, he still was a good fill in this week as the lack of a running game was not the reason the Lions lost.

3. The Lions defense did their best too

When it was announced that Chase Daniel was going to be the starting quarterback this week due to Mitch Trubisky’s injury, Lions fans probably were not expecting Daniel to be a major factor in deciding this game. While he did not turn the ball over for the Bears, the defense was still able to pressure him and force a lot of punts. Unfortunately, the Lions offense was unable to take advantage of these punts as they punted the same amount of times the Bears did.

This loss really put a damper on the Lions’ playoff hopes. After surprising the Panthers last week, a win against the Bears this week really would have helped the Lions get back in the playoff hunt. But, Matthew Stafford seems to struggle against any team that is above .500 or has a really good defense. The Bears fit both of these categories as their defense dominated near the end of the game and ended up forcing turnover after turnover. This now brings up the question that since Jim Caldwell got fired after a 9-7  season, where does this leave coach Matt Patricia since he is now currently 4-7? Overall, this season is just about over for the Lions, so now fans are probably already looking towards the draft.

Carolina Panthers

Three Takeaways from the Detroit Lions surprising victory over the Carolina Panthers, putting them at 4-6.

1. The Lions made the most of what they could for offense

With Marvin Jones and Michael Roberts both out with injuries, the Lions had to make best with what they had on the roster. Kenny Golladay took full advantage of this as he had 113 yards receiving with an incredible touchdown catch to take the lead late in the game. Also, Kerryon Johnson was having a great game until he injured his knee, which left Theo Riddick and LeGarrette Blount to handle running back duties. The offense was only able to put up 20 points, but that is all they needed for victory.

2. The defense only had three sacks, but they were timely sacks

When the Lions defense got their sacks in this game, they ended up benefiting every time. Two of the sacks ended up forcing a punt, and the 3rd sack ended up backing up the Panthers try at a field goal attempt, which was then missed. Ziggy Ansah, Jarrod Davis, and Devon Kennard all accounted for these sacks. One thing that has been consistent with Patricia this year is blitzing the linebackers, which has led to a lot of them getting sacks this year.

3. The Lions did get lucky on that two point conversion

After the Panthers scored with 1:07 left in the game, everybody thought the Panthers would attempt the extra point to take the game into overtime. But, considering that Panthers kicker Graham Gano missed an extra point earlier in the game, head coach Ron Rivera decided to go for the two point conversion and the win. On this two point conversion, Cam Newton did have a receiver open on the play, but he just missed the throw. This ended up costing the Panthers the game and helped Detroit’s playoff hopes alive.

The Detroit Lions have been very odd this year. When they play teams that analysts and most fans think they are going to lose, they end up winning. But, then in games where the Lions should win or at least be competitive in, they end up losing. This victory keeps the Lions playoff hopes alive and makes the Thanksgiving game against the Bears their biggest game of the season. It’ll be very interesting to see what happens next for this team, especially considering how good the Chicago Bears have looked these past few weeks.
