Giants Release Connor Barwin

The New York Giants have officially released veteran linebacker Connor Barwin, a move that had been rumored for some time, the Giants officially announced on Monday.

Barwin was valued for his veteran leadership and locker room presence, but managed only one sack during the 2018 season, despite appearing in 15 games and starting 3 of those contests.

Barwin, 32, will now his the free agent market.

Giants’ Nate Solder Underwent Ankle Surgery

New York Giants offensive lineman Nate Solder underwent ankle surgeyr that will keep him out until at least training camp, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo.

Solder’s surgery wasn’t considered “major” and he is fully expected to return to the field by late July or early August.

Solder inked a four-year, $62 million contract, with $35 million guaranteed, last offseason.

Giants Sign Rod Smith

The New York Giants have signed veteran running back Rod Smith, who is set to backup Saquon Barkley.

Smith comes over from the Dallas Cowboys, where he provided depth behind starter Ezekiel Elliott.

Smith, 27, averaged only 2.9 yards per carry but was productive in 2017 where he averaged 4.2 yards per tote.

Additionally, his 6’3, 235 pound frame will add some physicality to the Giants backfield rotation moving forward.

Giants Restructure Kevin Zeitler’s Contract

The New York Giants have restructured the contract of veteran guard Kevin Zeitler, according to ESPN’s Field Yates.

The new deal will give the Giants cap flexibility as they approach the 2019 NFL Draft armed with two first round draft picks.

Per the new deal, $7.5 million of Zeitler’s $10 million for the 2019 season will be converted into a signing bonus, which will create $5 million in cap space for the Giants in 2019.

Zeitler is signed through 2021 and carries non-guaranteed salaries of $10 million and $12 million, which will be increased by $2.5 million for the restructuring here.
